5 Things to Say to a Grieving Friend

Falk Funeral Homes & Crematory • March 23, 2020

You can’t lessen someone’s grief entirely. However, there might be words you can say to make them feel better. These words aren’t magic, but they are useful. You can speak at the cremation.

Every cremation services Allentown, PA, help people move on after the death of their loved one. However, your life may be radically different. When your friend is grieving, all you want to do take away their pain. This is impossible. You can be there for them in person and in words. The following phrases can help.

1. You are in my prayers

If you or the deceased is religious, it’s helpful to know that you are praying for them. For many, grief is a central part of their faith. If you are not religious, you can still tell the mourners that they are in your prayers. Or, if the deceased is religious but the mourners were not, you can still say this. The phrase has meaning regardless.

2. I’m sorry for your loss

When you’re stuck and can’t think of anything else to say, tell the person that you are sorry for their loss. This is a typical phrase after someone dies for a reason. It’s an appropriate thing to say no matter how close or distant you are to the deceased’s survivors. This phrase is generic-sounding.

3. I don’t know what to say

Openness and honesty are refreshing. If you’re struggling to find something to say, admit it. After someone dies, they care about human connections. Just knowing someone wants to be there for them is immensely satisfying. Not being able to find the right words is okay. Sometimes, there really is nothing else to say.

4. Let me help

Asking for help is tough in the best of times. It can make you feel as though you can’t take care of yourself. When someone dies, their family and close friends may have trouble getting through their lives. By asking if they need help with anything, you’re letting them know that they are not alone and can depend on you.

5. I care

Simply announcing that you care can be a balm. People don’t spend enough time talking about their feelings. You need to make sure that your grieving friend knows that you are there and that you care about them. This is true even if the deceased died after a long illness. These deaths are painful for those left behind, even some believe that there is an afterlife.

Attending the memorial of someone you cared about feels bizarre. One moment the person is alive, and the next they’re dead. It’s hard to predict when it will strike. However, everyone on earth has to face it at some point.

Every time you see a friend grieving, it’s only natural to want to help. Using your words to express love and friendship is one of the only ways you truly help. It may not seem like much. But humans are social creatures.
