Are you attending a loved one’s funeral service or memorial soon? Proper funeral etiquette is crucial. Find out exactly what’s expected and what you need to do.

Funeral Homes in Pennsburg, PA

If you’re about to attend a service at funeral homes Pennsburg, PA, and want to be at the best of your behavior, then this guide is meant for you. In this article, we are going to answer several common questions of anyone who is planning to attend a funeral.

Not to mention, these tips will help everyone regardless of how many times they have been to a funeral before.

1. Get the Invitation

Attend a funeral event only if you’re invited. You may get a formal invitation like an email or social media invite.

2. How Should You Dress?

Choose an outfit that is a bit more formal and more conservative. Darker colors, especially black, are most appropriate. But you are no longer expected to wear completely formal clothing when attending a funeral. Think dressy or business casual.

But avoid bright or shiny colors as they give you unnecessary attention. You wouldn’t want to attend a funeral with a dress that literally says, “look at me!”

3. What to Do If You Can’t Attend?

If you are unable to go to the funeral, it is proper to let the family know. Some thoughtful ways include sending a text, flowers, or a sympathy gift. Mention your regret at being unable to attend, and express your sympathy and support.

4. Should I bring My Children?

Children grieve too, so they can attend the event if they wish to be present. This is more appropriate if you had a closer relationship with the departed soul. Just ask politely why they want to go

If you’re taking them, it is best to sit close to the exit so you can take them out if they begin to make noise.

5. When should I arrive at the funeral?

It’s always a good idea to reach a funeral service several minutes before it starts. Plan to arrive about 15 minutes early at least. This will give you plenty of time to park, sign the guest book, say hello to a few acquaintances, and find your seat without disrupting the event.

6. Where should I sit at the funeral?

Remember that the first few rows at the front are almost always reserved for the family and close friends. if you’re not one of them, then sit anywhere aside from the first 2-3 rows. But don’t jump your way to the front rows if you have reached a bit late.

7. Should I talk to the family?

Yes, definitely. Offer your condolences to the family. It should be brief and before the funeral begins. They will have dozens or even hundreds of people that wish to speak to them, so be considerate of their time, attention, and their ability to focus during an emotional time.

8. Should I take photos?

Taking photos at the funeral is considered very inappropriate - unless the family asks you to do so. Often a family will hire a professional photographer to take pictures. Don’t take out your camera as it draws attention to yourself at funeral homes Pennsburg, PA.
