Who Should Speak at the Funeral?

Falk Funeral Homes & Crematory • August 19, 2019

If a lot of people want to speak at the cremation service, you may have to decide who to give time to. The event can’t last forever. Here’s some advice on making the tough decision.

Are you searching for funeral or cremation services Allentown, PA? Then your mind is probably still gripped by grief and shock. Death is very hard to come to terms with. While you deal with your grief, you still have to try to function in the real world. It’s possible that you’ll be called on to help plan the funeral.

One of the things you might have to think about is who is going to speak at the funeral? It’s customary to present guests with a program. Every step in the agenda is laid out. There are practical reasons for this. Generally, you only have limited time at the funeral home. As much as you want to, you can’t turn the funeral service itself into an all-day affair.

The question then becomes, who should speak? Who should be given a slot? The answer isn’t as easy as it may seem first. In some cases, perhaps the majority, everyone who wants to speak during the service should be given a chance. In other situations, however, you’re forced to make a decision.

For example, when the deceased is famous or extremely well-known, there may be a lot of people who want to speak. The funeral service would last for days if everyone was given free rein. There are a couple of different ways to go about this. In one strategy, you limit the number of people who are allowed to speak during the official memorial. Another method is to give everyone a chance to speak but give them a short time limit, perhaps two to three minutes.

If the deceased had unusual or stormy relationships with their family, that could be another reason why you may want to control who speaks at the funeral. Every eulogy that’s delivered needs to reflect positively on the deceased. The goal is to honor the deceased’s memory, not rehash old problems.

Planning a funeral is an enormous responsibility. There’s heavy pressure to get every detail right. This includes designing the best possible funeral program. You have a lot of people you need to please. You want to honor the deceased to the utmost of your ability but you also need to think about time and efficiency.

If you don’t feel as though everyone will get to speak at the actual funeral, you can set aside time at the reception for people to share stories. That way, people can still express their grief to the rest of the survivors.

You can’t wait to plan your loved one’s funeral. It’s a necessary task. The rules of nature dictate that it must happen quickly. It’s not uncommon for a funeral to be hosted within a few days of the deceased’s passing.
