5 Tips For Managing Your Grief

Falk Funeral Homes & Crematory • September 9, 2019

Extreme grief makes it hard to get up. You need to learn coping strategies to survive. No one can bring your loved one back but there are tips to lessen your grief. Here’s what they are.

funeral homes Allentown, PA
All of the funeral homes Allentown, PA are designed to deal with the tragedy of death. It’s very difficult to have to accept that your loved is one dead but there’s no way to get around it. Pretending that it didn’t happen won’t help anyone.

Grief is the natural consequence when someone you love dies. However, if you’re not careful, the feeling can overwhelm your life. Follow the tip below if you need help managing your grief.

1. Go to the Funeral

Funerals are heart-wrenching. It’s not uncommon for people to sob during the entire service. Yet, there’s something very healing about funerals as well. You get to pay your respects in an environment with other people who loved the deceased. It can be very moving.

If you’re not sure if you can handle attending the funeral, see if there are any friends or family members willing to go with you.

2. Be Open

There’s an instinct to try to hide your negative emotions. You don’t want to become a burden for someone else. Yet, this is the exact opposite of what you want to do if you want to heal. To get better, you need to confront your emotions.

No matter how you feel, you need to be open with yourself. Give yourself permission to really experience all of your emotions, even if they’re negative.

3. Meet People

Being social allows you to get out of your own head. You’ll stop focusing on your own concerns if you reach out to other people. It’s true that no one will ever be able to replace your loved one. But that doesn’t mean you can’t have new special people in your life. Even the act of trying to meet new people can be enough to help you feel better. Your loved one wouldn’t want you to spend your whole life suffering.

4. Meditate

Wild, unruly thoughts can quickly grow obsessive. When you can’t stop thinking negative thoughts, you’ll end up trapped in your grief. You need to take control of your thoughts. One of the easiest ways to do that is to start meditating. Meditation is an ancient practice that it is used to keep people in the moment. If you focus on what you’re body is feeling right now, you can’t think about bad things in the past.

5. Give it Time

Grief takes time to heal. Sometimes, the only thing you can do is wait. You won’t be able to move on from the death in a day and maybe not even in a few months. Everyone’s timeline is different. The only thing you can do is be generous. Let yourself feel all of your emotions.

The time will pass. There’s no other choice. The arrow of time only goes one way.
